What is Chai Masala?

In ancient India, “chai” was originally used to describe anything with herbs that could be brewed. “Masala” means spice blend. Many tea experts believe the “first” masala chai drinks were developed by traders from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Bengal. In India, each family has its own treasured version of Chai Masala. It’s customary to welcome guests with a cup.

Traditionally, chai is made using black tea, often Assam tea (though you can substitute green tea). Containing less caffeine than coffee but more than green tea, black tea is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds.

Indianlife Chai Masala spice is a fragrant, robust blend of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. Ginger has been shown to improve digestion, and clove and cinnamon are very high in antioxidants. So drinking chai is delicious – and it’s healthy too (Just take it easy on the sugar).

A little bit goes a long way with our Chai Masala Spice – use as little as 1/8 teaspoon to create delicious, authentic chai drinks. Use dairy or your favorite non-dairy milk and follow our instructions on the label. Try adding a pinch to coffee or hot chocolate for an added kick.
